There is mounting clinical evidence demonstrating the health benefits of medical cannabis for a variety of medical conditions. At WOW Wellness, we have helped thousands of patients embark on a journey to optimal wellness with medical cannabis.
Are you ready to unlock your healing powers with medical cannabis?
The Center for Disease Control estimates approximately 50 million Americans suffer from chronic pain, which is defined as persistent pain lasting greater than 12 weeks. This type of pain can debilitating and there is growing evidence that medical cannabis is an alternative treatment option for severe and/or chronic pain. Joint pain, headaches, cancer-related pain, and neuropathic pain.
Muscle spasms can affect any individual and these spasms are created by the sudden, involuntary contraction of muscle tissue, and may last from a few seconds to several minutes. There are a number of different root causes of muscle spasms. A study at University of South Carolina revealed THC binds with the natural cannabinoid receptors in our bodies and reduces inflammation leading to reduced muscle spasms.
Wasting Syndrome is an involuntary loss of more than 10% of body weight (e.g. muscle mass and at least 30 days of diarrhea/weakness and fever. Wasting Syndrome is an HIV/AIDS-defining condition. It also results from cancer and other chronic medical conditions. Medical cannabis has been demonstrated to be of benefit in this patient population by reducing nausea/vomiting along with pain and increasing appetite.
Cachexia is also referred to as "Wasting Syndrome". This occurs in the later stages of a disease when the body is working hard to fuel the brain. This drains the body of energy/nutrients stored and protein sources are removed from the muscles and bones. Symptoms include involuntary weight loss, fatigue, decreased appetite, inflammation, and muscle weakness. Research confirms medical cannabis stimulates appetite and decreases inflammation in cachexia.
Anorexia is defined by the National Eating Disorder Association as a "serious eating disorder characterized by self-starvation and excessive weight loss." It is also referred to as a lack of appetite which can also be associated with certain medications and cancer therapies. The research has demonstrated the body's own endocannabinoid system plays a vital role on appetite and medical cannabis can be therapeutically valuable by correcting imbalances.
Severe nausea is a feeling of sickness in the stomach, especially when accompanied by a distaste for food and an involuntary impulse to vomit. It occurs as a result of a variety of medical conditions including Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Gastroparesis, and Gastroesophageal Reflux (GERD). It also occurs with specific medications and cancer therapies. Medical cannabis has been demonstrated as effective in chemotherapy-induced nausea.
Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness in individuals over age 60. It is an eye disease typically associated with increased intraocular pressure, in which damage to the eye (optic nerve) can lead to loss of vision and potential blindness. The research has demonstrated CBD and THC can provide neuroprotective benefits, while THC can reduce intraocular pressure. This may ultimately limit the progression of the disease which can reduce vision loss.
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition triggered by exposure to traumatic stress, particularly experiencing or
witnessing a life-threatening event, like combat, a natural disaster, a car accident, or sexual assault. Potential symptoms include flashbacks, nightmares and severe anxiety, as well as uncontrollable thoughts about the event. Two recent studies point to the way that cannabinoids may help treat PTSD.
Other Chronic Medical Condition which is severe and for which other treatments have been ineffective will also qualify for the medical cannabis as an alternative treatment option. For example, cannabis has demonstrated clinical benefit in Anxiety Disorders when utilizing CBD combined THC. Medical cannabis is utilized in approximately one-third of patients for depression. Cannabis has also been successful in treating insomnia and other sleep disorders.

Annual Certification
When you first acquired your MMCC registration, it was quite a process to get to the finish line. Thankfully the renewal certification process is much smoother and has one step to fulfill, a yearly recertification.
Have We Seen You Before?
We strive to notify all of our patients who previously certified with us of certification expiration 30 days prior to necessary renewal. This will provide you with plenty of opportunity to schedule a renewal certification appointment with us and guarantee you will have no gap in access to your medicine. If you have used another MMCC Certifying Provider in the past and interested in a certification appointment with us, we would love to serve you!
Your Recertification Appointment
Much like our initial certification appointments, we apply the same principles to our renewal certification appointments. We'll discuss your journey with medical cannabis, and we will again provide you with the most up-to-date research and guidance on how cannabis medicine can impact your specific qualifying medical condition. We leave no stone unturned when it comes to your journey to "optimal wellness".
All Done, See You Next Year
Following your recertification appointment with WOW Wellness Center, you are eligible to continue to purchase at a licensed Maryland dispensary for another 365. However, our communication does not stop here! If you have any questions about your certification, usage, or any other wellness question...we are always here for you. You are required to renew your registration with the MMCC every 3 years as identified by the expiration date on your card to continue to be eligible to purchase at a licensed Maryland Dispensary. This expiration date on your card is typically NOT the same date as your certification expiration date.
Complete the renewal prior to the expiration date on your card to prevent having to reapply to the MMCC for a new patient registration number. This can be achieved by logging into your Maryland One Stop Account, click "Renew", update Maryland address if necessary, and pay the $50 registration fee.
The MMCC requires you to be re-evaluated by a MMCC Certifying Provider every 365 days to renew your certification to continue to be eligible to purchase at a licensed Maryland Dispensary. The certification expiration date can be found on your Written Certification, which can be accessed from the One Stop portal.
At WOW Wellness, we also provide a copy of your certification in your patient portal. You can log on to the WOW Wellness Patient Portal and access your certification to also check the certification expiration date. Become familiar with your certification expiration date to prevent a gap in medicine.
Please reach us at info@wowwellnesscenter.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.
The MMCC requires the patient to register with the State of Maryland every 3 years. This registration date is reflected on your card. Every 3 years, you must renew to continue to purchase at a licensed Maryland dispensary. Every year, you are also required to certify with a MMCC Provider to continue to be eligible to purchase at a licensed Maryland dispensary. Consider this annual renewal as a yearly medical check up for a "prescription" renewal.
No, your registration expiration date with the MMCC is every 3 years and your certification expiration date is every 365 days.
No, although some FSA/HSA plans can be used for payment of your certification.
No.
Possession and use of medical cannabis is a violation of the federal Controlled Substances Act, and compliance with Maryland State medical cannabis laws is not a legal defense to a violation of federal law. The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has the authority to enforce federal cannabis laws, even in states with authorized medical cannabis programs. However, federal budget legislation passed in 2014, subject to reauthorization each year, prohibits the DOJ from interfering with the implementation of State medical cannabis programs. Courts have consistently interpreted this statutory provision to protect “individuals who engaged in conduct permitted by state medical marijuana laws and who fully complied with such laws.” U.S. v. McIntosh, 833 F.3d 1163 (9th Cir. 2016).
You visit in-person or via telehealth with a registered provider with whom the patient has a “bona fide provider-patient relationship”. If the patient meets the provider's criteria for treatment with medical cannabis, the provider will issue a certification.
You will visit a licensed Maryland dispensary. You will need your temporary MMCC ID card or a copy of your MMCC Certification along with your Driver's License.
Following obtaining a certification, you will receive a MMCC Registration Card from the Maryland Department of Health in the mail. It typically takes several months to arrive to your address. In the interim, you may use your MMCC Temporary ID Card or copy of certification along with your driver's license to enter a licensed Maryland dispensary.
A legal patient may travel to any location in the state of Maryland (other than federal government property when in possession of medical cannabis). Possession of cannabis is a violation of federal law and Maryland residents should carefully read the current state statutes regarding the use of medical cannabis and be aware that taking cannabis across State lines is a federal offense. Cannabis is also illegal on federal government property. The State of Maryland laws cannot authorize you to travel to other states, jurisdictions or countries with this medicine in your possession.
The following states currently accept out-of-state medical cards:
A patient may obtain medical cannabis from a dispensary of their choice. The patient’s certification will be recorded in the Commission’s database and can be confirmed by any licensed dispensary.
The certification issued by a provider for a patient identifies the amount of dried flower and THC that the patient may purchase in a 30-day period. The MMCC has established 120 grams of usable cannabis (primarily dried flower) as a 30-day supply and 36 grams of THC as a 30-day supply. The limit is calculated as a ROLLING 30-day limit- not by calendar month. Here is further information directly from the MMCC to understand how the allotment works.
Yes.
A patient should notify the Commission within 3 days of address change. The updated address information can be directly provided to the MMCC. Call 410-487-5100 for the proper process.
No, a patient does not need an ID card from the MMCC to purchase at a licensed Maryland dispensary. Once registered with the MMCC and certified by a MMCC Certifying Provider, the patient can visit a licensed Maryland dispensary with a government-issued ID card (e.g., driver’s license or passport) for proof of identity and a copy of the written certification when purchasing medical cannabis at a licensed dispensary. The temporary ID card can also be obtained by logging onto One Stop and can be brought with valid government ID to a licensed Maryland dispensary.
Patients do not have to disclose that they possess medical cannabis and do not have to consent to a search. However, if a search is conducted and medical cannabis is found, the patient should present their patient ID card or direct law enforcement to our database.
Maryland law does not prevent an employer from testing for use of cannabis (for any reason) or taking action against an employee who tests positive for use of cannabis (for any reason).
No, Maryland law does not allow this.
Embarking on a cannabis journey can be overwhelming and as a patient you may be uncertain as to where to start to ultimately provide relief to the symptoms you are experiencing. It is not a typical medicine that is prescribed by your medical provider with a consumption method and dosing regimen specified. Cannabis is a medicine that takes experimentation to determine what will be most effective in symptom management for each individual. This is the silver lining of experimentation, as you may also uncover relief in other ways that you were not anticipating.
At WOW Wellness, we are a provider who is leading the way in medical cannabis education for our patients. Here is a further in-depth look as to how:
